DEMONSTRATION OF INNOVATIVE TOOLS AND ADVANCED COMPUTER MODELS FOR ASSESSMENT, ANALYSIS AND MONITORING OF WATER RESOURCES IN KHOREZM REGION OF UZBEKISTAN

The regional project of GIZ Ecologically oriented regional development in the Aral Sea region (ECO-ARAL) in cooperation with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and Information and Analytical Resource Center of Ministry of Water Resources of Uzbekistan in the framework of a joint project entitled “Increasing water use efficiency in the Aral Sea Region”, organized a one-day training on 26 August 2022 in Urgench. In the event a diverse group of 42 participants representing specialists of Basin Irrigation System Authority, District Irrigation Departments, Hydrogeological Ameliorative Expedition, Scientific Research Center of Water Problems in Khorezm and Karakalpak Branch of the Scientific Research Institute of Irrigation and Water Problems took part.

The Training was opened by a speech of Julian Felten, advisor of ECO-ARAL. During the training IWMI project team demonstrated global data sources and ways to retrieve them to use as an input data for models and tools in data scarce regions using Google Earth, SAS Planet and Climate Engine. Computer models for calculating crop water requirement CROPWAT, Strategic Asset Management System SAMS and water data sharing platforms Majysis were also demonstrated during the training. Training participants received demonstrated tools and computer models with great interest.

The Training was organized in an interactive way and discussions were held after each presentation. Participants indicated that the proposed innovative tools are helpful to carry out assessment, analysis and monitor of water resources in their respective organizations. In addition, they stated that they need more trainings on advanced tool and instruments as well as use of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing datasets to obtain in depth knowledge on innovative tools and computer-based water management models.

At the end of the training, the project team delivered laptops and digital information tools for representatives of Karakalpak Branch of the Scientific Research Institute of Irrigation and Water Problems and Scientific Research Center of Water Problems in Khorezm. Participants highlighted the need to regularly organize such a training on digital technologies in the Aral Sea region.
