CROP DIVERSIFICATION FOR INCREASING THE ECONOMY AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE SOIL QUALITY IN THE ARAL SEA REGION

Since 2021 ECO-ARAL in partnership with ICARDA implementing a project on crop diversification and saving irrigation water by laser guided levelling the land and scaling. The objectives of the partnership include:

  • –  Identifying the type of crop that is more profitable amongst cotton, winter wheat,
    spring wheat, mungbean, chickpea and pea
  • – Improving soil health with legume in the rotation
  • – Improving human nutrition at lower cost
  • – Capacity development in mungbean seed production

To implement the activities on fields five farmers in Karakalpakstan and five farmers in Khorezm region are selected for piloting purpose. From the scientific angle, an International crop Specialist, national experts from Crop Research Institution  Genetic Research Institution in Tashkent, from NGO KRASS in Khorezm region and the specialists from Grain and rice scientific production centre and Crop Husbandry Research Institute, Chimbay, Karakalpakstan are involved for the joint efforts.

So far the team members are on the place to implement the activities, autumn planting of spring wheat accomplished, autumn planting of laser levelling experiment is completed in five farming communities in Khorezm region and currently spring wheat planting activities are in progress in the land of two farmers of Karakalpakstan and three farmers in Khorezm region. As well as these, crop establishment data prior to winter is recorded.
