DEMONSTRATION OF INNOVATIVE TOOLS AND ADVANCED COMPUTER MODELS FOR ASSESSMENT, ANALYSIS AND MONITORING OF WATER RESOURCES

Дата

July 26, 2022, Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan | The regional project of GIZ ECO-ARAL in cooperation with International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and Scientific-research Institute of Rice Growing in Kazakhstan within the framework of a joint project entitled “Increasing water use efficiency in the Aral Sea Region”, organized a training programme in Kyzylorda city of Kazakhstan. The event was participated by diverse groups of 34 participants representing experts from Kyzylorda branch of Kazvodkhoz, Kyzylorda Hydrogeological Ameliorative Expedition, Aral-Syrdarya Basin Inspectorate for Regulation Use and Protection of Water Resources and Kyzylorda University named after Korkyt Ata.

During the one day training, IWMI project team demonstrated global data sources and ways to retrieve them to use as an input data for models and tools in data scarce regions using Google Earth, SAS Planet and Climate Engine. Computer models for calculating crop water requirement CROPWAT, Strategic Asset Management System SAMS and water data sharing platforms Majysis also demonstrated during the training programme.

The training was organized in an interactive way – lively discussions followed each presentation. Participants were interested with proposed innovative tools and indicated that these tools were helpful to carry out assessment, analysis and monitor of water resources in their organizations. In addition, the training participants stated that more training programmes should be held on advanced tool and instruments, using geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing datasets, to build their capacity in using innovative tools and computer-based water management models.
