GIZ ECO ARAL project in cooperation with ICARDA and Research Institute of Plant Genetic Resources organized a workshop to exchange experience on cultivation of early maturing sort of mung bean “Durdona” in the Aral Sea region.
The workshop was held on December 5, 2023 in Urgench city (Khorezm region) and was attended by farmers, dekhkans, local and international specialists and experts in the field of agriculture.
Participants of the event discussed the present status of cultivation of mung bean crops and different varieties of it in Uzbekistan, in particular, farmers shared their experience on cultivation of early maturing variety of mung bean “Durdona”.
This variety of mung bean was developed by the Research Institute of Plant Genetic Resources and is characterized by short ripening period, high yield, salt and heat resistance.
At the end of the discussion, the participants emphasized the need to encourage the cultivation of mung bean by farmers in the Aral Sea region, as the ability of mung bean to fix nitrogen allows the use of less fertilizers in its cultivation, so the less fertilizers farmers use, the more they save, and thus their income increases. Also, reducing the use of mineral fertilizers improves soil structure, thus protecting the environment.
